Perhaps the most widely taken out of context phrase in the history of our nation’s founding documents is “separation of church and state”. Once upon a time I was a slightly leaning lefty (basically right out of college) and had developed the notion that this phrase meant something that in fact it does not.
First, let’s ask a few questions.
Where is separation of church and state in the Constitution? How about the Declaration of Independence? What about the Bill of Rights? Maybe the Articles of Confederation?
Nope! It’s not in any of our founding documents.
So where is it and what does it mean?
